As many know, Miss Mexico is the new Miss Universe...yay! Today, the Associated Press did a little piece on her win. They did some talking on her dress and bikini, then went along to talk about Miss Venezuela being a sore loser ( yeah, yeah we know your country always wins). They probably just did that to lead into discussing Miss USA and her being a Muslim. They state, " The United States was represented by Miss USA Rima Fakih, a 24-year-old Lebanese immigrant from Dearborn, Mich. She was eliminated after the opening number. Her Miss USA win spurred celebrations among Arab-Americans. Pageant records aren't detailed enough to show whether Fakih is the first Arab-American, Muslim or immigrant to win Miss USA". Apart from questioning her nationality, they of course have a huge link about her thoughts on the Mosque being built two blocks from ground zero. Needless to say, she does not support the project. She said, "I totally agree with President Obama with the statement on constitutional rights of freedom of religion, but I also agree that it shouldn’t be so close to the World Trade Center. We should be more concerned with the tragedy than religion.”

I'm not really sure what to think of this article. First of all, I love how they tied Miss Universe to the Mosque. I guess they really know what people want to hear right about now. Sure Miss Mexico is the new Miss Universe, but that's not important when Miss USA is a Muslim, who added her two cents on the whole issue. In the end, I'm not sure who this piece was really about. Was it about Miss Mexico, Miss USA's identity, or about yet another way in which people can talk about the Mosque controversy.
Of course it's about the mosque! It just wouldn't feel right for yet another news source to give relevant news nowadays, right? The Mosque is hot right now, and everyone's regurgitating the issue. Its just a shame that Miss Mexico has to share her article with the controversy, instead of being mentioned and honored the correct way.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree!I guess they just gotta keep talking about it from different angles. I guess that is what the media does so people don't get too bored. Wasn't that part of the debate today? How is this responsible media or reporting? So if its not part of a controversial issue or it can't be tied in then its not worthy to be truly talked about? Whatever happened to just reporting the news as events happened? Miss Mexico won...yay...and that should be end of it.
ReplyDeleteIf you were given the opportunity to run a story involving beautiful women and the mosque along with the fact that the last big pageant winner (opposed gay marriage) is still somewhat fresh in folks' minds? It's definitely not hard news to me. It seems like they are grabbing attention with sex appeal to spur "Crossfire"-like debate among viewers.
