Losing the Votes

The New York candidate for governor, Carl Paladino, criticized his opponent, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, for walking during the gay pride parade. He also did it in response to the arrest of 8 men in a gay hate crime. He said that we should not be teaching our children that homosexuality is the right way to go. He said we should promote getting married and having kids as the successful thing to do. He also mentioned that we should not be setting this example on our kids and schools. Well, Mr. Paladino this is exactly why kids are hanging themselves all over the country. We are teaching our kids and future generations to be accepting of gays so that hate crimes and bullying stop. I guess that gay people can't be successful, get married, or have kids? It's not okay to be spreading these types of messages to young people. The message should be of acceptance and love. He should not be criticizing his opponent either because he wants everyone to be equal. Plus, is it ever a good to isolate a specific group and risk losing their votes? With what we have learned of the mass media and their power, I think this story can certainly steer gay voters from voting for him in the gubernatorial election

  1. It seems that Paladino is assuming that promoting tolerance toward the homosexuality equates promoting the homosexual "lifestyle". I must argue that the media or Cuomo should come to the defense and make the point that acceptance of alternative lifestyle is so important in today's society, especially since the diversity in cultures across America is so prominent, that learning to be accept is essential for socialization. Mostly, I find it interesting that he even criticized Paladino for demonstrating against 8 men that committed a hate crime- isn't that a good thing?

  2. I know, but he is just assuming wrong about that. Children need to be taught respect for all others not just heterosexual people. I completely agree with you that the press or Cuomo should come to the defense of promoting equality for everyone. I mean it is so important for children who are gay to feel like they have support or tragedies are going to keep on happening. Most people like walking in the gay pride parade especially public officials because it shows how they stand on that issue. Finally, I love how he was surrounded by all those (I don't know what they were... priests? Rabbis?)clapping. I mean I dare him make those comments in front of everyday citizens and those religious quacks who were clapping.
